Our Exceptional Team

Jey Mbiro

Founder & Director

Raised in one of the largest and poorest slums on the African continent, Jey’s childhood was a difficult one. He grew up in a one-room house with his single mom, three brothers and ten other family members. When she grew ill, Jey’s only option was to move to the streets of Nairobi to beg for food and money. At only 9 years of age, he was arrested and imprisoned for stealing. When he was released, he was invited into Compassion International’s child development program. Jey’s life changed because someone extended a hand to hold and show him the way. Now, he wants to pass that same helping hand on to others through Sauti Village. Jey also speaks to youth, college students and adults about the effects of poverty, the importance of mentorship and ways to strategically make a difference. Now a father of two girls, Shiloh and Sage, Jey enjoys calling Dallas, Texas, home.

Desmond Kamanda

Program Manager

Desmond was born and raised in Ofafa Maringo slum in Nairobi, and understands the challenges of childhood in a marginalized community.  He was brought up sharing a single 9 x 9 ft room with his parents and seven brothers.

As an adult, Desmond developed a passion for ministry and mentorship that has taken him to study at the Gary Whetstone School of Biblical Studies and Careforce Lifekeys, a Melbourne, Australia-based leadership organization with a range of structured courses developed to address the need for restoration and discipleship.

Desmond loves working with Sauti Village to inspire boys and girls from less privileged backgrounds with life skills and mentorship to reach their God-given potential.

Phyllis Gitau

Program Manager

Phyllis was born in Nairobi, Kenya, in the Mathare slum.  Growing up, she had a strong desire to continue her education and attend university, and faced challenges due to financial constraints.  With the support of well-wishers and NGOs, she was successful in obtaining her Environmental Studies degree from Machakos University. The experience to pursue and achieve this dream fueled her passion to help strengthen the resilience of children and youth like she had been, and to contribute to her Mathare community.  Phyllis is dedicated to serving and empowering young girls and boys by connecting them with the resources and mentorship they need to thrive and fostering resilience. In her spare time, Phyllis enjoys traveling, cooking, reading and spending time with friends.
